Sculpture and Painting / Sculptura si pictura |
Paul Neagu , (...) was often called the most important Romanian artist since Constantin Brancusi.
His sculptures, paintings, drawings and documentation of his performances are in numerous public collections, including the British Museum, the Tate, V & A and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. He exhibited and performed in many countries, and in recent years he had two important public sculptures erected in his homeland: Century Cross, in Charles de Gaulle Plaza, Bucharest; and Crucifixion in Timisoara.
Neagu was also a much valued teacher. Over the years he taught in a number of art schools here - notably Hornsey, the Slade and Chelsea - and abroad. In 1976 he was an associate professor at the Royal College of Art. Among his British students were Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor and Rachel Whiteread.(...)

He exhibited and performed in many countries, and in recent years he had two important public sculptures erected in his homeland: Century Cross, in Charles de Gaulle Plaza, Bucharest; and Crucifixion in Timisoara.
Contrary to the current of sculpture in Britain in the 1970s, Neagu asserted that sculpture did not necessarily have to refer only to the means of its making but could find a language to express more complex ideas, albeit symbolically.(...) |

Paul Neagu's poetry anticipates - or more simply echoes - a string of themes brilliantly exposed in the speechless idiom of his sculpture.(...)
Poezia sculptorului Paul Neagu anticipeaza vizionar - cand nu reverbereaza viu, reiterandu-le -, temele unei meditatii sclipitor inscrise in limbajul fara cuvinte al creatiei sale artistice.(...)

| In 1968 and 1969 his work was shown in mixed exhibitions of Romanian art in Prague, Zurich, Paris, Turin and Hamburg. When he moved to Britain in 1970 he was barely known here. However he quickly began to make a reputation with his dynamic performances and paintings and his secret and intriguing three- dimensional objects.
Within five years, he had a one-man exhibition at the prestigious Museum of Modern Art in Oxford (1974) when Nicholas Serota was its director. This was followed by further major shows in London at the ICA (1979) and the Serpentine Gallery (1987). Neagu's work was first shown in Britain by Richard Demarco, who did more than anyone to introduce contemporary Eastern European art to a British public in the last three or four decades of the 20th century.(...) |
